General description
Acetonitrile (MeCN) is widely employed as a solvent in various
studies and has high dielectric constant (37.5). Various purification
procedures to obtain different grades of acetonitrile for use in
different studies (polarography, spectroscopy, etc.) have been reported
by many researchers.1
Acetonitrile is a nitrile that is hydrogen cyanide in which the
hydrogen has been replaced by a methyl group. It is a toxic compound,
attributing it to the metabolic release of cyanide, which impairs
cellular respiration by inhibiting cytochrome oxidase. It is in the form
of a colorless liquid with an ether-like odour. Generally it is used as
a solvent and in the making of the pharmaceuticals. It is also used for
HPLC analyses, polymers, spinning fibres, casting and molding plastics.
It also finds application in the extraction of butadiene and other
olefins from hydrocarbon streams; in coating textiles and dyeing; in the
refining and extraction of copper; in the photographic industry; and as
a stabilizer for chlorinated solvents.
